Authentic Cowichan Sweaters
Traditional Craft Mixes with Modern-Day Style
The Judy Hill Gallery is proud to offer authentic, hand-crafted Cowichan Sweaters. What makes these traditional sheep’s wool sweaters so special is that no two are ever alike. For example, the wool is never dyed and the colour of the garment is actually determined by the natural colour of the wool on the sheep. For this reason, the colour palette of an authentic Cowichan Sweater is always white and dark brown or black and gray.
Handcrafted by Local Artisans
We work directly with local knitters who produce these beautiful sweaters and each one has a distinct style of knitting. Some knitters prefer creating designs with geometric shapes, which were similar to the patterns woven into Coast Salish baskets. Others incorporate animals, fish, and birds. Additionally, measurements are traditionally made using fingers rather than a ruler.
For these reasons, authentic Cowichan Sweaters are impossible to mass-produce. Every sweater is an individual work of art, never to be duplicated.
